Our Mission

Protecting the Freedom to Read. Celebrating Voices That Matter.

T

he Banned Book Tour exists to defend literature from censorship, uplift marginalized voices, and empower communities to explore, understand, and celebrate the stories that shape our society. We focus on Black authors, inclusive histories, and culturally significant works that have been challenged or banned in schools, libraries, and communities across the United States.

Through education, storytelling, events, and digital tools, we provide readers, students, educators, and families the resources to engage, learn, and take action — turning awareness into meaningful change.

History of the Banned Book Tour

The Banned Book Tour was founded in response to the growing wave of book bans across the nation, particularly targeting Black authors and inclusive narratives. What began as a small initiative to highlight restricted works in select communities has grown into a nationwide movement combining advocacy, literacy programs, cultural events, and digital platforms.

From pop-up Freedom Libraries to school workshops and public readings, our mission has always been clear: ensure that stories, ideas, and histories are accessible to all — and that censorship never silences the voices that matter most.

Leadership

Our leadership team brings together educators, organizers, cultural advocates, and community builders who share a unified mission: protecting the freedom to read. Guided by experience across civil rights, youth literacy, media, and community development, they help shape the vision, partnerships, and momentum behind the Banned Book Tour.

Voices They Tried to Silence

Explore a curated selection of the most influential and frequently challenged books in America—works that have shaped culture, expanded understanding, and amplified the voices many are now fighting to silence. These titles stand at the center of today’s censorship battles, representing stories about identity, history, and truth that communities deserve access to. By showcasing them here, we reaffirm a core principle of the Banned Book Tour: that powerful literature should be protected, celebrated, and placed directly into the hands of the people.
